Our Stories – Dominican Republic

After 5 years in Guatemala, Heart Care International began its next 5-year commitment in the Dominican Republic at La Plaza del Salud Hospital in 2000.

Then, through successful collaboration with our partner organization, Heart Care Dominicana, the country’s first independent pediatric heart program was created at the CEDIMAT Hospital in Santo Domingo.

HCI’s work in the Dominican Republic is now generously supported by the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, whose mission is to provide essential support for children in the Dominican Republic (and in New England) who cannot afford the critical cardiac services they need. Through their generosity, Heart Care International continues to travel to the Dominican Republic with the focus on training surgeons to perform very specific types of cases and training nurses in specific case bedside care.
