Our Stories – Peru
In 2011, Heart Care International travelled to Peru for the first time to provide specialized high quality treatment to children with congenital heart disease. The result was astonishing. Heart Care International quickly built a strong relationship with the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (INSN) San Borja in Lima. and discovered a highly committed medical community keen on raising the quality of their cardiac care.
Like all others, missions to Peru have a strong focus on training and education. Heart Care International provides this hands-on when we travel, but we strive to have year-round impact. INSN is a unique hospital in Latin America in the technological advantages it has built for its doctors and medical professionals. Records can be captured electronically and accessed throughout the hospital. This is not the case in most hospitals in developing countries who serve the neediest population.
Because of INSN’s technological capabilities, Heart Care International has been able to begin tele-conferencing. This has been especially important when in-person assistance is not an option. INSN doctors can present a challenging case and HCI medical professionals can offer strategies for patient treatment. Real-time, doctor-to-doctor video conferencing allows Heart Care International to build a presence in Latin America 365 days a year, not just when we are in-country. This is the future, and the future is bright.
